The spots on our body are scientifically called moles. Moles are harmless clusters of melanocytes in the form of spots in various parts of the body. However, not all moles are the same, and certainly not all are dangerous. They differ in shape, size, and color.
Dysplastic moles are the type of moles with the highest risk of being cancerous. A mole may be considered dangerous when it shows one of the following signs:
- Change in the color of the mole: Significant changes in the color of the mole, such as black or red color, may indicate danger.
- Change in the size of the mole: If a mole suddenly changes size, enlarges, it is a warning sign.
- Change in shape: If a mole is wavy or asymmetrical, it may be dangerous.
- Appearance of itching, pain, or bleeding.
These dysplastic moles should be examined by a dermatologist, and depending on the assessment, they should be surgically removed entirely and sent for biopsy. Early detection of a dangerous mole can be successfully treated and save lives.
There are some preventive measures we can follow to protect ourselves:
- Protection from the sun
- Examination of moles twice a year
- Self-examination of moles for size, color, and shape
- Avoidance of tanning beds
