The moles that we have on our bodies are scientifically called nevi. Nevi are harmless concentrations of melanocytes in the form of spots on various parts of the body. However, not all moles are the same, and certainly not all are dangerous. They differ in shape, size, and color.
Dysplastic nevi are the type of mole with the highest risk of being cancerous. A mole can be considered dangerous when it shows one of the following signs:
- Change in color of the mole: Major changes in the color of the mole, such as black or red, may be indicative of danger.
- Change in size of the mole: If a mole suddenly changes size, grows larger, it is a warning.
- Change in shape: If a mole is wavy or asymmetrical, it may be dangerous.
- Appearance of itching, pain, or bleeding.
These dysplastic nevi should be examined by a dermatologist and, depending on the assessment, should be removed surgically in their entirety and sent for biopsy. Early detection of a dangerous mole can be successfully treated and save lives.
There are some preventive measures we can take to protect ourselves:
- Sun protection
- Examine your moles twice a year
- Self-examine your moles for size, color, and shape
- Avoid Solarium
